At the end of the 19th century, Queen Regent María Cristina chose San Sebastián as her summer residence. Within years, all of European aristocracy followed. The city was covered in palaces, casinos and gardens — a setting of perpetual celebration where diplomats, spies and artists crossed paths.

The summer capital of Europe
It all began in 1887, when Queen Regent María Cristina of Habsburg established her summer court at the Miramar Palace, overlooking La Concha bay. The royal presence transformed the small Basque port into a resort of international prestige.
The Grand Casino opened in 1887. The Hotel María Cristina in 1912. The tramway connected the beach to the La Perla spa. Spies settled into the grand hotels — Spain, neutral during World War I, became a nest of intrigue between French, German and British agents.
This golden interlude ended with the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Palaces became hospitals, casinos closed. But the buildings remain, intact, silent witnesses of a golden age that only the initiated can still read in the stone.

At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language. Hunt the clue — it materializes as golden letters on the real wall or floats in front of you.
