The round church of Vera Cruz hides the crusaders' last secrets
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
In the shadow of the Alcázar, a twelve-sided church defies time. The Knights of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre guarded a fragment of the True Cross here.
The Church of Vera Cruz, consecrated in 1208, is one of the most mysterious churches in Spain. Its twelve-sided shape imitates the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Long attributed to the Templars, it actually belonged to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre — but the Templar legend persists, fed by the strangeness of the place and the thickness of its walls.
« "Non nobis, Domine, non nobis, sed Nomini Tuo da gloriam." »— — Motto of the Knights Templar — "Not to us, Lord, but to Your Name give the glory"
The Church of Vera Cruz was built in 1208 by the Knights of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Its round shape echoes the rotunda of the Holy Sepulchre, and its two-level inner chamber served as a place for the initiation of knights.
Tradition holds that a fragment of the True Cross — the lignum crucis — was kept here, which gave the church its name. When the order was dissolved, the relic was transferred to the neighbouring parish of Zamarramala.
As for the Templars, their presence in Segovia is attested by other traces: the commandery of San Marcos, inscriptions on the ramparts, and mysterious mason marks on the stones of the city wall.
