The Aqueduct of Segovia is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world. Its one hundred and sixty-seven arches rise to twenty-eight metres, and not a single stone is bound by mortar. For two millennia, this structure supplied the city with water — an engineering feat that popular legend could only attribute to the devil.

The engineering of the impossible
The aqueduct was built during the reign of Emperor Trajan, at the end of the 1st century AD. It carried water from the Fría River in the Sierra de Guadarrama, over fifteen kilometres to the heart of the city.
Its construction is a technical marvel: twenty thousand granite blocks cut with millimetric precision, stacked without mortar, held in place by their weight alone and the perfection of their assembly.
The legend of the diabolical pact appeared in the Middle Ages, when the inhabitants could no longer conceive that such a wonder was the work of mere mortals. It is said that a niche at the summit once housed a statue of Hercules — replaced in the 16th century by a Virgin who still watches over the aqueduct.

At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language. Hunt the clue — it materializes as golden letters on the real wall or floats in front of you.
