Three centuries of light, one night of exile
From the 12th century, Segovia housed one of the most important aljamas in Castile. The Jewish community included royal physicians, cartographers, translators and financiers who played an essential role in the kingdom's administration.
The great synagogue, built in the early 13th century in Mudéjar style, was the spiritual heart of the community. The judería housed up to five thousand inhabitants — a quarter of the city's population.
In 1492, the Alhambra Decree of the Catholic Monarchs ordered the expulsion of all Jews from Spain. Those who refused conversion had to leave within four months, abandoning homes, businesses and cemeteries. The entire quarter was absorbed into the Christian city — and the memory of its inhabitants, slowly erased.
