The Forgotten Treasure of the Erudite Tsar

« Ivan the Terrible's library, carefully assembled by his ancestors and augmented by himself, was a true treasure of knowledge. »
Nikolai Karamzin, Russian historian (1818)

The Myth of the Libereya: A Byzantine legacy in the heart of Russia

The story of the Libereya, Ivan the Terrible's legendary library, begins long before him. Its foundations were laid by his grandmother, Sophia Palaiologina, niece of the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI. Upon marrying Ivan III of Muscovy in 1472, she brought with her a precious collection of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew manuscripts, salvaged from the fall of Constantinople. These works, imbued with ancient wisdom and the secrets of the Eastern Roman Empire, formed the nucleus of a collection that the Russian tsars, and particularly Ivan IV, sought to enrich.

Ivan the Terrible, though known for his cruelty, was a cultured and polyglot ruler. His thirst for knowledge reportedly led him to acquire rare volumes from Europe, from celestial maps to treatises on magic and alchemy, integrating them into his growing library. Rumor had it that it was so vast it required secret chambers beneath the Kremlin, where it was carefully preserved and cataloged. But upon Ivan's death in 1584, the treasure of the Libereya vanished, giving rise to one of the greatest mysteries in Russian history, the subject of numerous expeditions and speculations.

1472
Marriage of Ivan III and Sophia Palaiologina, bringing the first Byzantine volumes to Moscow.
1533
Accession of Ivan IV the Terrible, beginning of his reign and active enrichment of the Libereya.
1584
Death of Ivan the Terrible and enigmatic disappearance of the Libereya.
