The story of the Libereya, Ivan the Terrible's legendary library, begins long before him. Its foundations were laid by his grandmother, Sophia Palaiologina, niece of the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI. Upon marrying Ivan III of Muscovy in 1472, she brought with her a precious collection of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew manuscripts, salvaged from the fall of Constantinople.
