The Secret of Salem's Builders

In 1841, as the Oregon Trail carved its brutal path westward, a band of pioneers founded Salem, Oregon's future capital. But amid the triumphs of platting the town and raising its first buildings, a dark conspiracy unfolded. The leaders, hardened by the trail's horrors, hid a cryptic legacy—a map encoded with symbols of betrayal, pointing to a fortune in gold dust smuggled from California claims. Whispers claim a rival faction murdered the key founder to seize it, cursing the site with misfortune that still haunts the streets. Today, fresh clues have surfaced in the shadows of the State Capitol and Pioneer Cemetery, where the Oregon Pioneer statue—known as the Gold Man—gazes down enigmatically. Track the 8-mark trail through historic monuments, decoding riddles tied to circuit riders, mission bells, and forgotten graves. Uncover the traitor's identity, locate the buried cache, and break the curse binding Salem's pioneer legacy. The truth awaits—will you claim it?

« Nous ne pouvons pas nous empêcher de nous demander ce que l'avenir nous réserve. Mais le passé, lui, nous dit qui nous sommes. »
Jesse Applegate, pionnier de l'Oregon Trail

Salem: Terminus and Capital Under Test

Salem, meaning 'peace', was initially established in 1840 by Methodist missionary Jason Lee, near the site of the Oregon Methodist Mission. The town quickly became a pivotal point for settlers on the Oregon Trail, the vast migratory route that saw thousands of Americans cross the continent westward. In 1844, the Oregon Institute, forerunner to Willamette University, was founded there, marking the importance placed on education on this new frontier.

The status of capital of the Oregon Territory was the subject of fierce debate and intense rivalries among several nascent towns. After several relocations, Salem was designated the territorial capital in 1851, and then the state capital in 1859, upon Oregon's admission to the Union. Early leaders like Samuel Thurston, Asahel Bush, or Jason Lee himself, left their mark, shaping a city that, despite challenges, became the political heart of Oregon.
