Your journey begins at Vodena Vrata, the Water Gate, built in 1710. This is the only one of Tvrđa's four original gates still standing today, serving as the northern gate of the star-shaped fortress, named because it faces the Drava River. It was the historic entry to the Drava, one of the fort's two main communication routes with the outside. The gates were closed every evening to ensure peace within the walls, and life resumed in the morning. This essential site in Osijek, whose strategic importance is linked to the Drava River and its confluence with the Danube, was initially occupied by the Romans who built the city of Mursa there. The fortress ramparts, whose construction began in 1712, were designed by engineers like Mathias von Kaiserfeld and Maximilian Gosseau de Henef.
As you walk along the Sjeverni bedemi Tvrđe, the fortress ramparts, you grasp the scale of the 17th-century Austrian imperial project. The Osijek fortress, the largest on the border, was completed around the 1860s with eight bastions, two arsenals, two major depots, the garrison headquarters, the court-martial, a military hospital, and seven barracks. Its irregular star shape was built according to the model of Dutch lowland military fortifications. Although the demolition of the walls began in 1923 and was completed in 1926, parts of the first and eighth bastions have been preserved along with the northern wall and the Vodena Vrata. These remnants tell the military history of Slavonia and Osijek, its most important administrative and military center in the 18th century.
The heart of Osijek's historic Baroque center beats in Trg Svetog Trojstva, Holy Trinity Square. This Baroque ensemble is the best preserved in Croatia. In the center, the Plague Column, an iconic monument, recalls past epidemics. The square has retained its Baroque character with minor modifications to this day. Nearby, the Zgrada Glavne straže, the Main Guard Building, a key administrative and military building from the 18th century, exemplifies characteristic 18th-century Baroque architecture. These sites embody military heritage and Habsburg architecture in Croatia, making Osijek a prime location for an interactive visit and thematic tour.
Continue towards Crkva sv. Mihaela arkanđela, St. Michael's Church, an iconic site of Tvrđa. Built within the context of the fort's Baroque development in the 18th century, this military garrison church reflects the religious importance of Osijek's administrative and military center. It is an integral part of the fortress's Baroque architectural ensemble. Not far away, a remnant of the old Ottoman fort, the Turski zid (Turkish Wall) or Filibejeva utvrda, bears witness to the site's earlier occupation before the Habsburg takeover in 1687. This trace of the medieval Ottoman city, located next to the access road to Tvrđa, offers a rare glimpse into the region's history. These monuments of Osijek highlight the rich military heritage of Slavonia and the evolution of Croatia's Baroque fortress.
As you conclude your exploration of Tvrđa, you pass through a very attractive architectural complex, a succession of Baroque-facaded buildings, squares, and cobbled streets, undergoing progressive restoration. Osijek, the most important military, economic, administrative, and cultural center of Slavonia in the 18th century, retains this vitality today with its cafes, schools, museums, and galleries. Your outdoor escape game in Osijek will have revealed the history of this 18th-century star fort, from its Roman origins in Mursa to its key role under the Habsburgs. This augmented reality scavenger hunt in Osijek, ideal for discovering Osijek with family, offers you a unique perspective on this historical monument, a Roman archaeological site, and a preserved Baroque ensemble. You leave Osijek's Tvrđa with an intimate understanding of its tumultuous past and resilience.
