Meknes — Harem's Secret Chronicle

🎭Your Mission

You are Aïcha, a secret scribe within Moulay Ismail's imperial harem in Meknes, circa 1700.

Your mission is to find the lost chronicles of Mou

Dive into the forbidden secrets of Moulay Ismail's harem, the builder sultan who married over 500 women and transformed Meknes into an imperial capital in the 17th century.

« Sultan Moulay Ismail had so many wives that he could not know them all, and his children were so numerous that he did not know their exact number. »
Dominique Busnot, History of the Reign of Moulay Ismail, 1714

The story that haunts this land

Your investigation begins at Bab el Khemis, the Thursday Gate, where caravans of slaves and wives arrived weekly to supply Moulay Ismail's harem. This 17th-century fortified gate still bears traces of imperial controls: here passed provincial tributes, diplomatic gifts and those Berber, sub-Saharan or European women the sultan collected like living jewels. Chronicles of the time report that over 2,000 women lived within the palace walls, watched by 4,000 black eunuchs recruited from Sudan.

Bab Mansour Laalej reveals the architectural peak of this dynastic madness. Completed in 1732, five years after the sultan's death, this 16-meter-high monumental gate displays Carrara marble pillaged from Volubilis and Corinthian columns torn from Roman ruins. Its name honors El Mansour Laalej, the converted Christian architect who directed the works. Behind this sumptuous facade hid the entrance to the women's quarter, where each wife had an apartment according to her rank in the harem hierarchy.

The medina of Meknes preserves the alleys where harem messengers circulated, those elderly women tasked with transmitting the sultan's orders to his wives. In this 40-hectare labyrinth, you follow their secret steps between bourgeois houses where favorite concubines' families lodged. Moulay Ismail had established a complex system: each woman who bore him a son received a house in town, a life pension and the honorary title of Lalla. Chroniclers count 867 sons and daughters born from these multiple unions.

Heri es-Souani, the royal granaries, testify to the pharaonic logistics needed to feed this plethoric court. These 23-meter-high vaults stored wheat, barley and oil for 12,000 horses of the black guard and thousands of palace residents. An ingenious hydraulic system, fed by the Boufekrane river, maintained food freshness. Here the backstage is revealed: behind the harem's splendor hid an administrative and military machine of formidable efficiency.

Your journey ends at Fondouk El Hanna, former caravanserai where merchants transited to sell their most beautiful slaves to the sultan. These walls saw Circassian beauties, Andalusian dancers and Berber princesses who enriched the imperial harem. You leave with intimate understanding of this unique matrimonial system: Moulay Ismail collected women not only from lust, but wove through these marriages a network of political alliances that unified modern Morocco under Sharifian authority.
