When Menorca was British: from Fort Marlborough to Menorcan gin
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
For nearly a century, the Union Jack flew over Menorca. The British built forts, imported gin and transformed Mahón into a naval base. When they left, they left secrets in the underground galleries of Fort Marlborough.
Es Castell — formerly Georgetown — is the last town founded by the British in the Mediterranean. Its grid plan, Georgian houses and military harbour bear witness to an occupation that lasted, intermittently, from 1708 to 1802. Fort Marlborough, carved into the cliff above the cala de Sant Esteve, is a masterpiece of underground military engineering. Its counter-mine galleries, powder magazines and casemates form a defensive labyrinth unique in the Mediterranean.
« "Menorca is the only place in Spain where gin has been drunk since the 18th century. The English left — the gin stayed." »— — In the underground galleries of Fort Marlborough, facing the cove
In 1708, during the War of the Spanish Succession, an Anglo-Dutch fleet seized Menorca. The 1713 Treaty of Utrecht officially ceded the island to Great Britain. The British made Mahón the base of their Mediterranean fleet — the 5 km natural harbour being ideal for ships of the line.
Richard Kane, the first British governor, built the island's main road (still called "Camí d'en Kane"), introduced Friesian cattle and encouraged cheese production. The British founded Georgetown (Es Castell), built Fort Marlborough and Fort San Felipe, and introduced gin — which became Gin de Mahón, still distilled today by Xoriguer.
The island changed hands several times: French occupation in 1756, British return in 1763, Spanish invasion in 1782, English reconquest in 1798, definitive cession to Spain in 1802. But the British legacy persists: the sash windows of Mahón's houses, Xoriguer gin and English vocabulary in the Menorcan dialect.
