Angkor — Khmer Celestial Calendar Enigma

The Khmer Empire, which spanned much of Southeast Asia between the 9th and 15th centuries, was one of the most powerful and sophisticated civilizations of its time. Its capital, Angkor, was a masterpiece of hydraulic and architectural engineering. Builder kings like Suryavarman II, who constructed Angkor Wat in the 12th century, and Jayavarman VII, who built Angkor Thom and the Bayon in the late 12th century, created a complex network of canals, reservoirs (barays), and temples that reflected Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. At its peak, Angkor housed an estimated population of nearly a million people, making it one of the largest pre-industrial cities in the world.

However, in the early 15th century, Angkor was gradually abandoned. The reasons for its decline remain a subject of debate among historians: Thai invasions, major climate changes (droughts followed by intense monsoons affecting the hydraulic system), resource depletion, or political instability. The jungle eventually engulfed the temples, which were only rediscovered by the Western world in the mid-19th century, notably through the accounts of Henri Mouhot. The mystery of this vanished civilization continues to fascinate, and its stones still hold the secrets of a past grandeur.
