Jayavarman VII (reign c. 1181-1218 AD) was one of the greatest kings of the Khmer Empire. A devoted Mahayana Buddhist, he undertook a vast construction program, transforming the capital of Angkor Thom and its surroundings. The city, surrounded by walls and moats, was designed as an earthly representation of Mount Meru, the mythical center of the universe in Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. His reign marked a golden age of art and architecture, leaving a legacy of monumental temples and complex bas-reliefs.
The Bayon temple, at the center of Angkor Thom, is Jayavarman VII's masterpiece.
