From the summit of Benacantil to the harbour quays: Alicante between war and trade
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Santa Bárbara castle dominates Alicante from 166 metres. Moors, Christians, French and English fought over this rock for eight centuries. In 1691, a French fleet bombarded the city and detonated the castle's powder stores. The underground galleries that survived have not yet yielded all their secrets.
The Benacantil — the rocky mountain overlooking Alicante — has been occupied since the Bronze Age. The Moors built a fortress there in the 9th century. Alfonso X of Castile took it on Saint Barbara's day in 1248, hence its name. The castle unfolds across three enclosures: the Torreta at the summit (11th century), Philip II's central body (16th century) and the Revellín de l'Olla below. A lift carved into the rock in 1963 ascends from Postiguet beach to the summit. Below, the Explanada de España — a promenade of undulating mosaic lined with palms — and the Santa Cruz quarter, a former Moorish neighbourhood of white and blue houses, complete the picture of a city where the Mediterranean has always been the reason for everything.
« "From the summit of Benacantil, you can see Africa on clear days. That's why every empire wanted this rock — whoever holds it commands the sea." »— — On the Torreta, the highest point of Santa Bárbara Castle
The Arab fortress on the Benacantil, built in the 9th century, was one of the most powerful on the Levantine coast. Alfonso X took it in 1248 and made it the key to the Kingdom of Valencia's defence. In the 16th century, Philip II reinforced the castle with modern bastions against the Ottoman threat. The galleries carved into the rock served as powder magazines, cisterns and a prison.
The French bombardment of 1691 — during the War of the League of Augsburg — was the most devastating the city endured. Admiral d'Estrées' fleet fired over 3,000 cannonballs at Alicante. The explosion of the castle's powder stores shook the entire city. During the War of Succession, the fortress changed hands between Bourbons and Habsburgs.
At the castle's foot, Alicante's harbour prospered through the trade of wine, almonds and olive oil. The Explanada de España, built in the 19th century with 6.5 million mosaic tesserae, became the Levant's most elegant promenade. The Barrio de Santa Cruz, with its stairways, bougainvilleas and painted houses, is the last vestige of the Moorish quarter that clung to the Benacantil's flanks.

Outdoor escape game format: no physical locks, no actor, no fixed time slot. You start when you want, progress through Alicante · Santa Bárbara Castle, centre & harbour with your phone, and the city itself is the set. More immersive on local history, more flexible in pace.
Of course. Stop at a café, have lunch, resume later: your progress is saved. Many players bake a meal break into the trail, especially with families.
No, solo works very well. The outdoor escape game format in self-guided mode leaves room for introspection: read the story at your pace, hunt clues like a detective. 2-6 players is more social, solo is more contemplative.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons: mild temperatures, fewer tourists, gorgeous light. Summer is also great but go for early morning before 11 or late afternoon. Winter is perfectly playable, especially in southern cities — Alicante · Santa Bárbara Castle, centre & harbour often feels more authentic then.
