Šibenik becomes a Venetian possession in 1412, after centuries of Croato-Hungarian domination. The Republic of Venice immediately transforms this strategic position into a commercial and military outpost facing the Ottoman Empire. On Republic Square built in the 15th century, the Town Hall erected in 1530 in pure Venetian Renaissance style displays the Doge's coat of arms. Its clock tower with its 16th-century bell now rhythms Dalmatian life according to Venetian time.
Saint James Cathedral, Juraj Dalmatinac's masterpiece begun in 1431, embodies Venetian ambition in Dalmatia.
