Jean de Béthencourt and the first capital of the Canaries
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
In 1404, a Norman knight founded Betancuria in a hidden valley on Fuerteventura. It was the first European capital of the Canaries. Six centuries later, the village of 800 souls keeps the conquest's secrets in its church walls and forgotten archives.
Betancuria is a village of stone and silence in the heart of Fuerteventura. Jean de Béthencourt, Norman lord of Grainville-la-Teinturière, founded the first permanent European settlement in the Canaries here in 1404, with the blessing of King Henry III of Castile. He chose this interior valley, invisible from the sea, for protection against Berber raids. The Church of Santa María, founded in 1410, is the oldest in the Canaries. The Museo de Betancuria holds the conquest chronicles — Le Canarien —, the oldest account of the European exploration of the archipelago.
« "Béthencourt chose the most hidden valley on the island for his capital. What the sea cannot see, the pirates cannot find." »— — On the forecourt of Santa María church, the first church in the Canaries
Jean de Béthencourt left La Rochelle in May 1402 with his companion Gadifer de La Salle and about sixty men. After a stop in Lanzarote, he landed on Fuerteventura and gradually subdued the Mahos, the indigenous Berber-origin people. He founded Betancuria in 1404 in a deep valley, hidden from view from the coast.
Béthencourt obtained the title "King of the Canary Islands" from King Henry III of Castile, though he remained a vassal. He built the Santa María church, a Franciscan convent and a fortress. The Le Canarien chronicles, written by chaplains Pierre Bontier and Jean Le Verrier, constitute the most detailed account of this conquest — a foundational text of Canarian historiography.
In 1593, the Berber pirate Xaban Arraez captured and ravaged Betancuria, burning the church and carrying off the archives. The town was rebuilt but never recovered its power. The capital was transferred to Antigua in the 18th century, then to Puerto del Rosario. Today, Betancuria is a village of 800 inhabitants — the smallest and most beautiful on Fuerteventura.
