The Iron Lady and the Party
Ana Pauker (1893-1960), born Hannah Rabinsohn, was one of the most powerful figures in Romanian communism and one of the few women to reach such a position in Eastern Bloc countries. A founding member of the Romanian Communist Party, she spent many years in exile in the Soviet Union, where she forged close ties with the Stalinist leadership. Upon her return to Romania after World War II, she became the main architect of the country's Sovietization, holding the crucial posts of Minister of Foreign Affairs and member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Romanian Workers' Party.
Her fall in 1952, alongside Vasile Luca and Teohari Georgescu, marked a turning point. The triumvirate of 'Muscovites' was accused of 'right-wing deviationism,' anti-Sovietism, and cosmopolitanism, typical accusations of Stalinist purges. In reality, this purge was orchestrated by Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej to consolidate his power and eliminate rivals perceived as too close to Moscow. Ana Pauker was gradually marginalized and placed under house arrest, but escaped a public trial and execution, probably thanks to her past ties with Stalin, whose death in 1953 changed the political climate.
