Pella — Alexander's Lost Capital Secrets

🎭Your Mission

You are a young Macedonian ephebe, personally tasked by King Philip II in 4th century BC Pella to decipher the architectural secrets of his vibrant capital.

Your mission leads you in the footsteps

Discover Pella, the ancient capital of Macedon, where Alexander the Great was born and Hellenistic history forged an Empire.

The story that haunts this land

Your quest for Pella's secrets begins at the House of the Stag Hunt Mosaic. Here, under the reign of Philip II, the pioneering tessellated mosaic technique, predating Alexandria's petrified models, took shape. Admire the mosaic made of small polychrome pebbles dating from the 4th century BC, measuring 4.3 x 3.2 m, depicting a stag hunt with a hunter on horseback. Discovered in 1968, it testifies to the opulence of the Hellenistic dwellings in the Macedonian capital, laying the foundations for the art that would embellish Pella's royal palaces.

Continue to the House of Dionysus, a vast aristocratic Hellenistic residence where the Macedonian elite contemporary with Alexander the Great gathered. The central mosaic, discovered in 1962, spans 8.95 x 5.65 m and depicts Dionysus on horseback, dating from around 330 BC. Its style, influenced by Ionian art and its architectural perspective framework, reveals Pella's cultural openness, a crossroads of artistic influences in Central Macedonia, long before the expansion of the Empire.

The Agora of Pella is your next stop, the beating heart of the capital. This large Hellenistic public market from the 4th-3rd century BC, with its dimensions of approximately 70 x 50 m, was the administrative and commercial center of the city. Excavations carried out since the 1950s have revealed a 32 m long south stoa with 12 pilasters, dated to the 3rd century BC, as well as the remains of a monumental fountain and integrated shops. Here, political decisions and commercial exchanges shaped the destiny of Macedon and Pella.

The Sanctuary of Athena Alkidemos awaits you, a Doric temple from the 4th century BC dedicated to Athena Protector of the People. Honorary inscriptions found on the site, dated 340-330 BC, attest to its importance under Philip II. Excavations in the 1970s unearthed the remains of the altar and cella, now preserved in the Pella Archaeological Museum. This place of civic worship offers a glimpse into the beliefs and religious practices of Alexander the Great's capital.

Your exploration culminates at the Archaeological Museum of Pella, the starting and ending point of your journey. Inaugurated in 1957, it houses over 1000 Hellenistic artifacts, including mosaics from the 4th century BC. On an exhibition area of approximately 1200 m², you will discover the birthplace of Alexander the Great, born in 356 BC, and the mosaics of the House of the Lioness, discovered in 1957 and dating from 330-300 BC. It is here that the treasures from the Royal Necropolis of Pella, including gold artifacts and weapons, are displayed, completing your immersion in the history of Central Macedonia.
