From Ancient Chersonesus to a Naval Base

Sevastopol's history begins with the ancient Greek city of Chersonesus Taurica, founded in the 6th century BC by colonists from Heraclea Pontica. This city-state, located on the Black Sea, operated for over a millennium, becoming a trading hub and a center of Hellenic culture. Its ruins, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, show this past, with remnants of basilicas, a theater, and residential quarters still visible.

The city known as Sevastopol today was founded in 1783 by Grigory Potemkin, under orders from Empress Catherine the Great, after the Russian annexation of Crimea. Its name, meaning 'August City' or 'City of Glory' in Greek, reflected its role as the primary base for the new Black Sea Fleet. The deep-water harbor of Sevastopol Bay made it an ideal location, transforming it into a naval fortress.

The Sieges of Sevastopol

Sevastopol's strategic importance made it a frequent target in conflicts. The most known is the Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War (1853-1856). For 11 months, Allied forces (British, French, Sardinian, and Ottoman) besieged the city, which was defended by the Russian army. The Malakhov Kurgan, a hilltop fortification, became a key battleground. Its capture by the French in September 1855 sealed the city's fate. The war left Sevastopol in ruins, but it was rebuilt and re-fortified, retaining its status as a naval base.

The city faced another siege during World War II. From October 1941 to July 1942, Sevastopol endured a 250-day siege by Axis forces. The city fell, only to be liberated in May 1944. The sacrifices and courage displayed by its defenders earned Sevastopol the title of 'Hero City' in 1965. The Obelisk to the Hero City on Ushakov Square and the Memorial to the Heroic Defense of Sevastopol 1941-1942 mark these events.

• —Grafskaya Pristan (Count's Wharf) — This white colonnaded pier on Sevastopol Bay is a ceremonial entrance to the city. It offers views of the harbor and the ships of the Black Sea Fleet. It was built in 1783 for the arrival of Empress Catherine the Great.
• —Monument to Sunken Ships — This monument stands in the sea off Primorsky Boulevard. It commemorates the ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet scuttled in 1854 during the Crimean War to block the harbor entrance.
• —Primorsky Boulevard — A promenade along the waterfront. It offers views of Sevastopol Bay, and access to the Aquarium-Museum and the Monument to Sunken Ships.
• —Malakhov Kurgan — This hill played a role in the Crimean War. Today, it is a memorial complex with fortifications, cannons, and an eternal flame. It offers insight into the city's military past and views.
• —St. Vladimir's Cathedral (Admiralty) — This cathedral is the burial place of several admirals of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, including Mikhail Lazarev, Vladimir Kornilov, Vladimir Istomin, and Pavel Nakhimov. It has grand architecture and historical significance.
• —Panorama of the Defence of Sevastopol 1854-1855 — Located on Istorichesky Boulevard, this circular building houses a panoramic painting depicting a moment of the Crimean War: the storming of the Malakhov Kurgan on June 6, 1855.

The best time to visit Sevastopol is during late spring (May to early June) or early autumn (September to early October). During these periods, the weather is warm, suitable for exploring on foot, and crowds are smaller than in peak summer months. Average temperatures range from 18-25°C.

Summer (July and August) brings hot weather, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C. The city can be crowded with tourists, especially around beaches and main attractions. While the sea is warm for swimming, sightseeing can be less comfortable.

Winter (November to April) can be cold and windy, with occasional snow. Many outdoor attractions might have reduced hours or be less enjoyable due to the weather. Some smaller establishments may close for the season. It is best to avoid this period.

Sevastopol is served by Simferopol International Airport (SIP), approximately 80 kilometers northeast of the city. From the airport, you can reach Sevastopol by bus, marshrutka (shared taxi), or private taxi. The journey typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

Within Sevastopol, the city center is walkable, especially around Primorsky Boulevard, Nakhimov Square, and Grafskaya Pristan. For longer distances, a public transport system of buses and trolleybuses operates throughout the city. Marshrutkas are also a way to get around.

Parking in the city center can be challenging during peak season. It is advisable to use public transport or park outside the main tourist areas and walk. Many shops and museums operate from 9 or 10 AM to 6 or 7 PM, with some smaller shops observing a siesta in the early afternoon. Sundays may have reduced hours for some businesses.
