The Heroic Siege of Sevastopol (1941-1942)
In October 1941, the swift advance of the Wehrmacht into the Soviet Union led to the encirclement of Sevastopol, the main base of the Black Sea Fleet. The siege began, orchestrated by German General Erich von Manstein, against a desperate but resolute Soviet defense. For 250 days, the city was subjected to incessant bombardments by heavy artillery and aviation, turning every street into a battlefield. Defenders, sailors, soldiers, and civilians organized a fierce resistance from underground bunkers and makeshift fortifications, making Sevastopol an impregnable fortress.
Despite legendary acts of heroism, such as those of sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko or the stubborn defense of Malakhov Kurgan, German numerical and material superiority eventually overcame the exhausted defenders. On July 4, 1942, Sevastopol fell, but its sacrifice tied up significant Axis forces for months, delaying their progress on other crucial fronts. For its exceptional courage, the city was honored with the title of « Hero City » in 1965, an eternal testament to its role in the Great Patriotic War.
