From Roman Outpost to Wallachian Capital

Câmpulung, also known as Câmpulung Muscel, has a history extending to pre-Roman times. Archaeological evidence indicates human presence in the area between 1700 and 1600 BC. Geto-Dacians inhabited the region in the 2nd century BC. The Romans built the Jidava (or Jidova) Roman fort around 190–211 AD as part of the Limes Transalutanus, a frontier defense system. Remains of a Roman colony have been found nearby, identified with Romula, Stepenium, and Ulpia Traiana.

The earliest written record of Câmpulung dates to 1300, an epitaph in the local church for Laurencius de Longo Campo, who likely oversaw colonization by Transylvanian Saxon colonists. These colonists developed the town's urban culture, handicrafts, and trade. Câmpulung became the first capital of the feudal state of Wallachia in the 13th century. This status was held until the 14th century when the capital moved to Curtea de Argeș.

A Hub of Trade and Autonomy

During its time as capital, and after, Câmpulung functioned as a trading post. Its location on a major route connecting Wallachia with Transylvania, through the Rucăr–Bran Pass (approximately 24 km to the north), facilitated commercial traffic. This position led to the establishment of a customs point, supporting its development through trade. The town's prosperity fostered the growth of crafts and increased production, leading to a differentiation of labor and wealth within the community from the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

Câmpulung maintained a degree of autonomy from the Middle Ages until 1822. This medieval privilege was inscribed on the Cross of the Oath in the town square in the 17th century, confirming the rights granted to its citizens. These charters were compiled into a collection known as the 'Cloth of the Town of Câmpulung' and reconfirmed by Prince Constantin Mavrocordatos in 1747. However, administrative changes introduced by the Organic Regulations of 1831–1832 gradually reduced these traditional town privileges.

• —Negru Vodă Monastery — This monastic complex, with stone walls and a tall bell tower, was founded in 1215 by Radu Negru Vodă. The current church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, dates from the 14th century but was rebuilt in 1635 by Prince Matei Basarab after an earthquake in 1628. It houses the oldest preserved ledger stone of a Romanian ruler, belonging to Nicolae Alexandru Basarab (died in 1364).
• —Statue of Basarab I — This statue commemorates Basarab I, the first ruler of Wallachia, who established Câmpulung as his permanent residence around 1330.
• —Câmpulung Municipal Museum — Housed in a late 19th-century building that was once a girls' school, the museum presents local history, archaeology, and ethnography of the Muscel region. It contains artifacts from the Roman period, medieval documents, and traditional crafts.
• —St. James Catholic Church — This church, known locally as Bărăția, is the oldest Catholic building in Wallachia and has a Gothic spire. Its origins trace back to the 14th century, reflecting the presence of Transylvanian Saxon colonists.
• —Ruins of the Princely Court — These remains mark the site of the former princely residence when Câmpulung served as the capital of Wallachia in the 14th century. The ruins indicate the town's past political importance.
• —Town Hall Square — This central square, historically known as Sfântul Ilie Square, was the main public space in Câmpulung at the end of the 19th century. It remains a focal point.
• —'First Capital of Wallachia' Monument — This monument marks Câmpulung's historical significance as the initial seat of power for the Wallachian state.

The period from May through September offers pleasant weather for outdoor activities. July is typically the hottest month, with average highs around 23°C (74°F), and skies are often clear. June receives the most rainfall. Autumn, particularly September and October, has comfortable temperatures and fall foliage. Spring, from April to May, provides mild weather, with average temperatures from 8°C to 13°C (46-55°F).

Winter, from November to March, is cold and snowy, with January being the coldest month, averaging around -1 to 0°C (20-32°F). Snowfall occurs on approximately 20-25 days, and snow cover can last for 60-80 days. This period is less suitable for extensive outdoor sightseeing.

Câmpulung is approximately 144 km from Bucharest, a drive of about 2 hours and 47 minutes. The nearest airport is Brașov (GHV), 60.7 km away. Other airports include Sibiu (SBZ) at 93.8 km and Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) at 112.6 km. From Bucharest, a bus takes about 3 hours 55 minutes, with tickets costing $6-$11. Train services from Bucharest take around 4 hours 22 minutes with transfers, costing $18-$20. Buses are frequent from Pitești (1.5 hours) and direct buses run from Brașov (2.5 hours) and Târgoviște (2 hours).

The city center is walkable. Parking is generally available. The main streets, such as Negru Vodă, Râului, Matei Basarab, and Gruiului, were historically paved with cobblestones. Public transportation within the town is limited, making walking the primary way to explore. Local markets are a regular feature.
