From Mycenaean Kingdom to Classical Battleground

Pylos has been inhabited since Neolithic times, developing into a kingdom during Mycenaean Greece (1600–1200 BCE). The most prominent remnant of this era is the Palace of Nestor, on the hill of Ano Englianos, about 17 kilometers north of the modern town. This palace, believed to be the seat of King Nestor from Homer's Iliad, was an administrative and economic center. It was destroyed by fire around 1180 BCE, which preserved hundreds of Linear B clay tablets, offering insights into Mycenaean society.

In Classical times, the site of modern Pylos was largely uninhabited. However, it became a battleground during the Peloponnesian War. In 425 BCE, Athenian forces fortified the rocky promontory known as Koryphasion (Old Pylos) at the northern edge of Navarino Bay, leading to the Battle of Pylos where Athens defeated Sparta.

A Sequence of Conquerors and the Birth of Modern Greece

After a period of being scarcely mentioned, Pylos re-emerged in the 13th century as part of the Frankish Principality of Achaea, becoming known as Port-de-Jonc by the French and Navarino by the Italians. The Franks built the Old Navarino Castle in the 1280s. Venetian control began in 1417, lasting until 1500 when the Ottoman Empire conquered the area. The Ottomans used Pylos as a naval base and constructed the New Navarino fortress (Neokastro) in 1573, which still stands today. The region saw brief periods of renewed Venetian rule (1685–1715) and a Russian occupation (1770–1771) before the Greek War of Independence erupted in 1821.

The defining moment in Pylos's modern history arrived on October 20, 1827, with the Battle of Navarino. A combined fleet from Britain, France, and Russia defeated the Ottoman–Egyptian fleet, an event that secured Greek independence. The modern town of Pylos was laid out in 1829 by French military engineers from the Morea expedition, with its name officially revived by royal decree in 1833.

The monument, unveiled in 1930, features effigies of Edward Codrington, Henri de Rigny, and Lodewijk van Heiden.

The best times to visit Pylos are during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these shoulder seasons, the weather is warm and pleasant, suitable for outdoor activities, and the sea is warm enough for swimming from late spring. There are fewer crowds than in summer. Summer (June to August) is hot and dry, with August averaging 32°C (90°F) highs. While suitable for beaches, popular spots like Voidokoilia Beach can be busy. Winters (December to March) are mild but wet, with most rainfall between October and March. Museum hours may be reduced then.

Pylos is in the southwestern Peloponnese. The nearest major airport is Kalamata International Airport (KLX), approximately 45-50 kilometers away. From there, renting a car is recommended for exploring the region, as public transport options are limited. The town of Pylos is small and walkable, with its central square and harbor accessible on foot. Parking is generally available around the town, though it can be busier during peak season. The modern town was designed by French engineers in 1829, featuring arcaded shops and cafes around the central square. Many local tavernas and cafes are family-friendly.
