The history of Mystras
Frankish Foundation and Byzantine Takeover
Mystras was founded in 1249 by William II Villehardouin, the Frankish Prince of Achaea. He built a fortress on Myzithra hill, which offered a strategic position over the plain. Frankish control was brief. In 1259, William II was captured by Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos at the Battle of Pelagonia. As part of his ransom in 1262, Mystras, Monemvasia, and Maina were surrendered to the Byzantines. This event marked the start of Mystras's Byzantine period, transforming it from a military outpost into a city.
The Despotate and its Decline
By the mid-14th century, Mystras became the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea, a semi-autonomous province. This era, known as the Palaeologan Renaissance, saw Mystras develop as a center for art, culture, and intellectual life. Scholars like the Neoplatonist philosopher Gemistos Plethon were active here.
