From the Ebro bridge to the world's bodegas
Logroño was born on the banks of the Ebro, at a strategic ford on the route linking Castile to Navarre. The Stone Bridge — rebuilt in the 11th century by San Juan de Ortega and Santo Domingo de la Calzada, bridge-builders for pilgrims — made the city a compulsory crossing on the Camino de Santiago. The church of Santiago el Real, with its statue of Saint James the Moor-slayer, has welcomed pilgrims since the 12th century.
Wine has been present since antiquity, but the turning point came in 1858, when the Marquis de Riscal invited the Bordelais Jean Pineau to modernise winemaking techniques. When phylloxera destroyed the French vineyards, the Bordelais flocked to Rioja. The first modern bodegas — Marqués de Murrieta (1852), López de Heredia (1877) — adopted barrel ageing and the system of crianza, reserva and gran reserva that makes Rioja world-famous today.
