Hermitage — Recover the Forgotten Treasures

🎭Your Mission

You are a lead investigator for the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, assigned to the Hermitage case in Saint Petersburg, July 2006.

A brazen theft has shocked the world:

Hermitage: The Double Secret of Art's Survival

« Art is not a luxury, but a spiritual necessity. »
Joseph Orbeli, Director of the Hermitage during the Siege of Leningrad

The Hermitage: Guardian of History and Art

Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, the Hermitage Museum has become one of the largest and oldest museums in the world. Its collection, housed primarily in the Winter Palace, comprises millions of artworks and cultural artifacts. Over the centuries, this institution has experienced periods of great prosperity, but also existential threats, particularly during major conflicts that shook Europe.

Two episodes in particular tested the resilience of the Hermitage and its guardians. In 1812, Napoleon's invasion of Russia, though not reaching Saint Petersburg, prompted authorities to consider emergency evacuation plans. Later, during World War II, the Siege of Leningrad (1941-1944) was an unimaginable ordeal. Joseph Orbeli, the director at the time, organized the massive evacuation of collections to Sverdlovsk and the protection of remaining works in the museum's basements, transforming the Winter Palace into a bastion of culture against barbarism.
