Moika River — Rasputin's Murder Secret

Your investigation begins where Grigori Ras

Rasputin: Poison, Bullet, and the Neva's Ice

« I will die soon. If I am killed by simple Russian assassins, and especially by my peasant brothers, you, Tsar of Russia, will have nothing to fear. But if I am assassinated by boyars, by nobles, and if they shed my blood, their hands will remain stained with my blood, and their children will not see Russian land. »
Grigori Rasputin (attributed prophecy, 1916)

Twilight of an Empire

The assassination of Grigori Rasputin in December 1916 is a dramatic milestone in the decline of the Russian Empire. This charismatic and controversial "mad monk" from Siberia had gained considerable influence over the imperial family, particularly Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, who believed him capable of alleviating the suffering of her hemophiliac son, Tsarevich Alexei. This hold, perceived as a sign of weakness and corruption at court, exacerbated the discontent of the nobility and the people, already exhausted by the setbacks of World War I.

The plot targeting Rasputin was the work of a disparate group of monarchist conservatives, including Prince Felix Yusupov, Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, and Duma member Vladimir Purishkevich. Their goal was to "save" the monarchy from the hands of the man they considered a foreign manipulator. But far from stabilizing the situation, Rasputin's assassination only accelerated the fall of the Romanovs, who abdicated less than three months later, marking the end of a three-century-old dynasty and the beginning of an era of radical upheavals for Russia.
