February 1917
You are a loyal agent of the Okhrana, Tsar Nicholas II's secret police, in Saint Petersburg, February 1917.
The Russian Empire trembles. Tsar Nicholas II has vanished
**Twilight of the Tsar: February 1917 in Petrograd**
« « Mon Dieu, si j’étais seul ! Si l’on n’avait aucune responsabilité pour sa femme, ses enfants, pour la Russie, on pourrait tout envoyer au diable et tout laisser tomber… » »— Nicolas II, extrait d'une lettre à sa femme, Alexandra, peu avant son abdication.
In February 1917, the Russian Empire, already weakened by World War I, reached its breaking point. The capital, Petrograd, was a hotbed of growing discontent, exacerbated by food shortages, rampant inflation, and heavy losses on the front. Tensions peaked on February 23 (March 8 according to the Gregorian calendar), when women workers demonstrated for International Women's Day, quickly joined by thousands of strikers. What began as a series of spontaneous protests transformed into a popular revolution, with the Petrograd garrison troops soon refusing to obey orders and joining the demonstrators.
Faced with the scale of the uprising and the army's defection, imperial power collapsed. Tsar Nicholas II, isolated and unable to control the situation from his Mogilev headquarters, was forced to abdicate on March 2 (March 15), 1917. His brother, Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, refused the crown, thus ending over three centuries of Romanov dynasty rule. A provisional government was formed by members of the Duma, while the Petrograd Soviet of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies emerged as a parallel political power, ushering in a period of instability that would lead to the October Revolution.
