The 'Kala Pani': A Dark Chapter of India
The Cellular Jail in Port Blair, nicknamed 'Kala Pani' (black waters), was built by the British between 1896 and 1906. Designed for complete isolation, it embodied the ultimate punishment for Indian political dissidents. Its unique beehive-shaped architecture, with seven wings converging towards a central tower, was intended to prevent any communication between prisoners, thus breaking their morale and resistance.
