The Jauhar Conspiracy — Uncover Marwar's Hidden Sacrifice

🎭Your Mission

You are a royal archivist for the Rathores, sent in 1707 to document the defenses of Mehrangarh Fort after Aurangzeb's siege.

Your mission: to find

Delve into the legends of Marwar and uncover the secret of the ancestral sacrifice that forged the soul of Jodhpur, the Blue City of Rajasthan.

The story that haunts this land

Your quest begins at Mehrangarh Fort, a major Marwar fortification built in 1459 by Rao Jodha, founder of Jodhpur, on a 125-meter-high rock. The 5 km long ramparts, reaching 36 meters in height, withstood historical sieges, including that of 1707 by Aurangzeb against the Rathores. As you explore this UNESCO tentative list Mehrangarh Fort site, you decipher the first riddles that lead you through the museum's galleries, where 16th-century artifacts, including Rajput miniatures, testify to the rich heritage of Rajasthan.

Pass through Jai Pol, the 'Victory Gate' erected in 1808 by Maharaja Man Singh after his victory over the Jaats of Ajmer. This massive 20-meter-high gate, adorned with Jain and Hindu sculptures, is bristling with spikes to repel assault elephants. Nearby, the Jaswant Thada, a commemorative cenotaph from 1899, honors Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Built of translucent white Makrana marble, this monument covers 1.2 hectares and contains engraved plaques of the genealogies of Marwar's rulers since the 13th century, a key historical monument India for understanding Jodhpur's history.

The route then takes you to Toorji's Stepwell, also known as Zenana Stepwell, a baoli dug around 1740 under Maharaja Abhai Singh of Marwar. Its 8 levels of steps descend 33 meters, offering a glimpse into Rajput hydraulic engineering and its use by the women of the harem. Located less than 500 meters from Jai Pol, this stepwell is an example of typical Rajput architecture with vaulted galleries and sculptures. 1 km away, Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower), built in 1913 under Maharaja Sumer Singh, dominates the Sardar Market area, a landmark of old Jodhpur with its clock imported from England.

Continuing your Jodhpur visit, you explore the Brahmapuri Garden, laid out in the 18th century by the Rathores. Situated along the southern ramparts of Mehrangarh Fort, 300 meters from Jai Pol, this garden with pools and pavilions is linked to the Brahmanical traditions of Marwar. Although Mandore Gardens is 9 km north of Jodhpur, it was the ancient capital of Marwar before 1459 and houses royal cenotaphs (chhatris) from the 16th-18th centuries for 15 Rathore rulers, as well as 6th-century rock-cut temples, offering a perspective on older Rajasthan heritage. This is where the history of Jodhpur reveals its deep roots.

This Rajasthan thematic circuit takes you through centuries of history and culture. You have followed in the footsteps of Jodhpur's founders, explored battle and devotion sites, and discovered the architectural ingenuity of the Rathores. From the ramparts of Mehrangarh Fort to the marbles of Jaswant Thada, passing by the steps of Toorji's Stepwell and the bustle of Ghanta Ghar, you have completed a memorable interactive Jodhpur tour. This augmented reality GPS scavenger hunt offered you a deep immersion into the secrets and legends of the Blue City, revealing the richness of its heritage and the persistence of its spirit throughout the ages.
