On April 13, 1919, the day of Baisakhi, the Sikh spring festival, thousands of Indians, including women and children, gathered peacefully at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. This crowd was protesting against the repressive Rowlatt Acts, which curtailed civil liberties and allowed arrest without warrant. General Reginald Dyer, the military commander of the region, interpreting this gathering as a violation of the public assembly ban he had himself decreed, ordered his troops to open fire on the unarmed crowd. With exits blocked, the trapped people were massacred.
The official British toll reported 379 dead and over 1200 injured, although Indian estimates were much higher. The atrocity of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre shocked all of India and the world. This event, and Dyer's initial impunity, broke the faith of many Indians in British justice and galvanized the nationalist movement. Mahatma Gandhi, initially in favor of cooperation with the British, soon launched the Non-Cooperation Movement, marking a radical new phase in the struggle for independence.
