Sierra de San Francisco — Giants' Enigma

🎭Your Mission

The Great Mural — rock art unique in the world

« These gigantic paintings surpass in mystery and beauty anything I have seen elsewhere in the pre-Columbian world. »
Léon Diguet, Scientific Mission to Mexico, 1895

The rock art of the Gran Mural

The Sierra de San Francisco houses one of the most important concentrations of rock art in America. Between 5000 and 1000 BC, nomadic hunter-gatherer peoples created a monumental pictorial ensemble called 'Gran Mural' in more than 300 caves. These works represent stylized human figures of exceptional size (up to 5 meters), often with raised arms, accompanied by animals such as deer, bighorn sheep, and fish.

In 1895, French naturalist Léon Diguet was the first European to scientifically study these paintings during his mission for the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. He documented more than 200 sites and theorized the existence of a coherent symbolic system. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993, these works testify to a sophisticated civilization that mastered complex pictorial techniques using red and black mineral pigments. The mystery of their exact meaning persists, fueling contemporary archaeological research.
