Early Settlements and Spanish Arrival

Baja California Sur's history is shaped by its marine and desert environments. Indigenous groups, such as the Pericú people, lived in the region for thousands of years, relying on fishing, shellfish, and seasonal hunting. Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés arrived in the bay of La Paz in 1535, naming it Bahía de la Santa Cruz. Early attempts at colonization faced challenges from the desert conditions and native resistance. Sebastián Vizcaíno later named the area La Paz, meaning "The Peace," in 1596, referencing its calm waters. By the 19th century, La Paz developed into a port city and a global center for pearl diving. Pearls from La Paz were highly valued, contributing to the city's wealth until overharvesting caused the industry's decline.

Todos Santos, on the Pacific coast, began as a Jesuit mission in 1724. It functioned as a farming community, supplying the mission in La Paz with produce, wine, and sugarcane. By 1733, Padre Sigismundo Taraval founded Misión Santa Rosa de las Palmas. The town, renamed Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Todos Santos in 1749, remained a mission settlement until its closure in 1840. After the missions were secularized, Todos Santos became Baja's sugarcane capital, supporting eight sugar mills by the late 19th century.

From Fishing to Tourism

Cabo San Lucas, originally known as Yenecamú by the Pericú people, shows archaeological evidence of human presence for at least 10,000 years. In the 1500s, its rock formations, such as El Arco, offered strategic hiding spots for pirates to ambush Spanish fleets. The modern village of Cabo San Lucas was established in 1917 when an American company built a floating platform for tuna fishing, starting its fishing industry.

The construction of the Transpeninsular Highway in the 1970s improved access to the region, leading to a tourism expansion. La Paz became the official capital of Baja California Sur in 1974, guiding its development while maintaining its local culture. Today, these cities combine their historical foundations with modern tourism, offering both cultural heritage and natural features.

The period from December through May is suitable for visiting Baja California Sur, with mild temperatures and low humidity. Winter (December-February) is good for whale watching, particularly gray whales in northern lagoons and humpback whales in Cabo San Lucas. This period sees more visitors and higher prices around holidays. Spring (March-May) has warm days, low humidity, and blooming deserts, suitable for hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling before summer heat.

Avoid visiting during summer (June-August) due to high heat, increased humidity, and hurricane risk. September also experiences the year's heaviest rainfall. Fall (October-November) is a transition season with warm waters and fewer visitors, suitable for swimming with whale sharks and clear underwater visibility.

Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) in San José del Cabo is the main international airport. La Paz also has an airport, which may offer cheaper flights. From SJD, Todos Santos is about an hour and fifteen minutes north on Highway 19. Cabo San Lucas is a short drive from SJD.

Renting a car is recommended for exploring Baja California Sur, especially for visiting multiple destinations. Major roads like Highway 1 are maintained. In La Paz, Cabo San Lucas, and San José del Cabo, roads are paved but may have potholes. Street parking in Cabo San Lucas is free where curbs are white or unpainted; other colors indicate restrictions (yellow for taxis, green for loading/customer zones, red for no parking). La Paz also has designated parking areas, with red curbs meaning no parking and white curbs for regular parking. Public transportation includes buses and shared taxis in larger towns, but inter-city options are limited. Uber is available in Cabo San Lucas and La Paz.

Many hotels and resorts provide parking. For longer stays in La Paz, guarded parking lots are available.
