Cabo San Lucas — where the Baja California peninsula plunges into the Pacific Ocean — became in the 16th century the theater of ruthless maritime warfare. Spanish galleons, loaded with Chinese silks, Moluccan spices, and Manila silver, followed a millionaire trade route between Acapulco and the Philippines. This wealth tempted English corsairs, commissioned by Elizabeth I to bleed Philip II's finances.
Thomas Cavendish (1560-1592), nicknamed 'the Navigator', established in 1587 a secret base in the rocky coves of the cape. From there, his three ships pounced on galleons helpless after their Pacific crossing. In September 1587, he captured the Santa Ana, the richest prize ever taken by an English corsair: 122,000 gold pesos, plus silks and jewels. But Cavendish died during his second voyage, taking with him the secret of his treasure caches in the sea caves of Los Cabos.
