In the huerta of Murcia, where the Moors invented a garden of water
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
In 825, Abd al-Rahman II founded Mursiya amid an arid plain. Arab engineers dug a network of acequias that turned desert into orchard. When silk became Murcia's gold, the merchants hid their fortunes in their palace walls. Some have never been found.
The huerta of Murcia is a miracle of hydraulic engineering. The acequias — Arab irrigation channels — dug in the 9th century still function and irrigate 23,000 hectares of orange, lemon and mulberry orchards. The Consejo de Hombres Buenos, water tribunal that sits every Thursday before the cathedral, perpetuates a water justice system a thousand years old. Murcia's cathedral, with the richest Baroque facade in Spain and its 93-metre tower, dominates a city that was the capital of Spanish silk from the 15th to the 18th century.
« "In Murcia, water is worth more than gold. The Arabs understood this — that's why they dug their canals before building their palaces." »— — Before the Consejo de Hombres Buenos, thousand-year water justice
Abd al-Rahman II founded Mursiya in 825 as the capital of an Umayyad kora (province). Arab engineers set up a network of acequias diverting water from the Segura to irrigate the plain. This system, governed by the Consejo de Hombres Buenos, has been inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Heritage list since 2009. The Noria de la Ñora, a 14th-century water wheel, symbolises this water civilisation.
After the Reconquest by Alfonso X in 1243, Murcia became a silk production centre thanks to the huerta's mulberry trees. The silk merchants — the sederos — built palaces in the historic centre and financed the cathedral's construction. The Capilla de los Vélez, a masterpiece of Spanish Flamboyant Gothic, was commissioned by the Marquis of los Vélez with silk trade profits.
The cathedral's Baroque facade, completed in 1754 by Jaime Bort, is considered the richest in Spain. Its 93-metre tower, gilded altarpieces and Salzillo Museum — home to Spain's greatest Baroque sculptor, born in Murcia — make this an overlooked jewel. The silk trade declined in the 19th century, but the acequias continue to irrigate Europe's largest huerta.
