Eight positions, an unknown commander who became Atatürk
The Gallipoli campaign lasted nine months. The Allies — British, French, Australian, New Zealanders — landed on the peninsula's beaches but met fierce Ottoman resistance. An unknown lieutenant colonel, Mustafa Kemal, led the decisive counter-attack at Chunuk Bair with words that became legendary. Eight strategic positions along the strait still bear the marks of this battle that founded modern Turkey.
« "I do not order you to attack. I order you to die." »— — Lt Col Mustafa Kemal, Chunuk Bair, 25 April 1915
Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, conceived the plan: force the Dardanelles to reach Constantinople, eliminate the Ottoman Empire and open a route to Russia. On 18 March 1915, sixteen Allied battleships attacked the strait forts. Ottoman mines sank three ships. The naval plan failed.
On 25 April, the Allies landed on the Gallipoli peninsula. At ANZAC Cove, Australian and New Zealand troops found themselves pinned beneath cliffs. Colonel Mustafa Kemal, commanding the 19th Division, hurled his men into a counter-attack with the famous order "I do not order you to attack, I order you to die." The Allies evacuated in January 1916. Kemal became a national hero and, twelve years later, founded the Republic of Turkey as Atatürk.
