The Meenakshi Amman Temple, dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi (an incarnation of Parvati) and her consort Sundareswarar (Shiva), is one of the oldest and most important pilgrimage centers in India. Its origins date back to antiquity, with mentions in Sangam Tamil literature, suggesting ancient worship. However, the majority of the current structure and its gigantic gopurams (pyramidal gateway towers) were erected or significantly expanded between the 16th and 18th centuries by the Nayak rulers of Madurai, notably King Thirumalai Nayak.
