From Celts to oyster farmers: Vigo through the ages
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Before being Spain's largest fishing port, Vigo was a Celtic castro perched on a hill. Its inhabitants already watched the sea. Some of their stones are still there.
Monte do Castro, a wooded hill in the heart of Vigo, was first a fortified Celtic village (castro) 3,000 years ago. Then a Roman citadel, then a medieval castle. Now a public park, it preserves vestiges of all these eras. Descending towards the port, you cross the Casco Vello — the old fishermen's quarter — to Oyster Street where oyster farmers still open oysters on wooden barrels, as in the 19th century.
« "In Vigo, the sea isn't a landscape. It's a pantry. The Celts already knew that." »— — Facing the Rúa das Ostras, a barrel of oysters and a glass of Albariño
Vigo's first inhabitants settled on Monte do Castro around 1000 BC. This castro (fortified Celtic village) dominated the estuary and its marine resources. The Celts lived from fishing, herding and tin trading. The remains of their circular stone houses are still visible on the hill.
The Romans took the castro in the 1st century BC and founded Vicus Spacorum, a small port on the tin route. In the Middle Ages, Vigo remained a modest fishing village, fortified against Viking and Saracen raids. It was only in the 19th century that canning and oyster farming launched the city's growth.
Today, Vigo is Spain's top fishing port and one of Europe's largest. But in the Casco Vello, the stepped lanes, galleried houses and Rúa das Ostras preserve the old port's atmosphere. Oyster Street's farmers carry on a 19th-century tradition — oysters opened on barrels, washed down with Albariño.
