Your first stop takes you to the Zimmertoren, classified as a Historic Monument in 1936. Louis Zimmer, a local watchmaker (1888-1957), installed a mechanism there in 1930 simulating lunar phases and planetary positions, transforming this 1396 belfry into an astronomical tower. With its 42 meters in height and its 47-bell carillon, it is the starting point for your exploration of major Flemish heritage. From there, you have direct access to the Grote Markt, less than 100 meters away, where Lier's historic commercial heart has beaten since the 13th century, surrounded by 16th and 17th-century gabled houses.
Continuing your celestial investigation, you cross the Grote Markt, Lier's central square, then head towards the Sint-Gummaruskerk. This Gothic church, built between 1431 and 1549, is dedicated to Saint Gummarus (†774), the patron saint of Lier. Its vaults rise 28 meters high above a 5-aisle nave and 18 side chapels. The 98-meter south tower, visible from the Grote Markt (350m from the start), serves as your landmark as you search for clues near Saint Gummarus' Gothic tomb, an important medieval pilgrimage site for the history of Lier.
Your journey then leads you to the Begijnhof Lier, founded around 1258 and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998, as one of the 26 beguinages of Flanders. You wander among the 21 houses from the 16th-17th centuries and the 14th-century Saint-Ignace Church, accessible via Arrestraat, 500 meters from the Zimmertoren. The partially preserved original enclosing wall and the 1655 infirmary with its period pharmacy bear witness to the life of the beguines. This site, rich in history and architecture, contrasts with Zimmer's celestial mechanics but reveals another facet of time and devotion in Lier.
Leaving the beguinage, you walk along the Nete, a river flowing through Lier for 2 km. This waterway, canalized in the 14th century for the city's defense, was integrated into Lier's fortified system (walls from 1360-1410). A visible passage near the Lisperpoort, 650 meters from the Zimmertoren, reminds you of the strategic role of water. The Lisperpoort itself, built in 1368 and classified as a Historic Monument in 1943, is the last survivor of Lier's 7 medieval gates. Its Brabantine Gothic style and reconstructed drawbridge immerse you in the era when Lier was a fortified river city.
Your quest brings you back to the heart of Lier, passing through Felix Timmermansplein, 400 meters from the Zimmertoren. This square, named after the Lier writer Felix Timmermans (1886-1945), is lined with 18th-century bourgeois houses, extending the historic Zimmerplein-Grote Markt district. By completing the loop at Zimmerplein, you will have not only solved the celestial enigmas but also explored an essential part of Lier's history, from its UNESCO heritage to its historic monuments, making this visit to Lier a true immersion in the time and culture of Flanders.
