Your journey begins on Place Saint-Lambert, the main square of Liège, the city's historic heart since the Middle Ages. Surrounded by 18th-century neoclassical buildings, this vast 1.5-hectare area was the site of the former Saint-Lambert Cathedral, destroyed in 1795 during the Batavian Revolution. The archaeological remains, excavated between 1982 and 1996, bear witness to the importance of this place, linked to the Prince-Bishops who made Liège an independent entity until the end of the 18th century. It was here that markets and public executions took place, marking the life of the city.
A few steps away, the Palace of the Prince-Bishops stands, imposing. Built between 1526 and 1536 under the impetus of Erard de La Marck, this current courthouse of Liège features Flemish Renaissance architecture with a 90-meter long facade.
