May 1998 marks a brutal turning point in Indonesia's history. After decades of authoritarian rule under General Suharto and a deep economic crisis, popular anger erupted. On May 12, four students were shot dead at Trisakti University by security forces, triggering massive riots across Jakarta. These acts of violence particularly targeted the Chinese-Indonesian community, falsely accused of supporting the regime and controlling the economy, leading to looting, arson, and unspeakable atrocities.
These chaotic days, from May 13 to 15, saw the capital descend into anarchy. Thousands of buildings were set ablaze, hundreds of people perished, and numerous women of Chinese descent were victims of sexual violence. Domestic and international pressure, notably massive student protests occupying parliament, finally forced Suharto to resign on May 21, 1998, ending the New Order era and paving the way for the Reformasi period. However, the scars of these events, especially the fate of the Chinese victims, remain deep and often unresolved.
