East Timor, a former Portuguese colony, declared its independence on November 28, 1975. Nine days later, on December 7, Indonesia launched Operation Komodo, a large-scale invasion that marked the beginning of 24 years of brutal occupation. The Timorese resistance, led by FRETILIN and later CNRT under Xanana Gusmão, faced fierce repression. Between 1975 and 1999, an estimated 100,000 to 180,000 Timorese civilians perished as a direct or indirect result of the conflict and famine. The world, preoccupied with the Cold War and geopolitical interests, largely ignored the pleas for help.

On November 12, 1991, the Santa Cruz cemetery massacre, where over 250 demonstrators were killed by Indonesian forces, drew international attention, partly due to footage filmed by foreign journalists. This tragic event marked a turning point, rekindling international solidarity with East Timor. Finally, under increasing pressure, a self-determination referendum was held on August 30, 1999, where an overwhelming majority voted for independence. Despite further violence orchestrated by pro-Indonesian militias, East Timor officially became a sovereign nation in 2002, closing one of the darkest chapters in contemporary history.
