Peace Born from Tragedy
For nearly three decades, the province of Aceh was the scene of a bloody armed conflict between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). Founded in 1976 by Hasan di Tiro, GAM fought for the independence of the province, rich in natural resources but perceived as marginalized by Jakarta. This conflict, marked by human rights violations and thousands of victims, created a deep rift within Acehnese society, fostering lasting mistrust and suffering.
On December 26, 2004, a massive underwater earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami that swept Aceh's coasts, killing over 167,000 people and destroying infrastructure.
