On September 30, 1965, a group of soldiers, calling themselves the "September 30th Movement" (Gestapu or G30S), assassinated six Indonesian army generals, accusing them of plotting against Sukarno. This event served as a catalyst for an anti-communist purge of terrifying scale. General Suharto, then head of the army's strategic command, quickly took control of the situation, denouncing the G30S as a communist plot.
This coup was followed by a campaign of repression of unprecedented brutality. Between 500,000 and 1 million people, suspected of being communists or sympathizers, were killed. The CIA, among other Western powers, is suspected of having supported and orchestrated this repression behind the scenes, providing target lists. This episode not only eradicated the PKI, the world's third-largest communist party, but also ended Sukarno's rule, paving the way for Suharto's authoritarian "New Order" for the next three decades.
