Since the founding of the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th century, then Ayutthaya and finally Rattanakosin (Bangkok), Thai monarchs have been revered as sacred figures, often perceived as an incarnation of the god Vishnu or a Bodhisattva. This concept of the 'Divine King' (Devaraja) granted the sovereign absolute authority and unquestionable legitimacy, making any criticism or insult against him an act of lèse-majesté, punishable by severe penalties, even death in ancient times.
With the advent of the Chakri dynasty in 1782 and the founding of Bangkok, this system was consolidated. Although Thailand became a constitutional monarchy in 1932, the lèse-majesté laws (Article 112 of the Criminal Code) have remained exceptionally strict, protecting the King, Queen, Heir Apparent, and Regent.
