Thailand's modern political history truly begins with the Siamese Revolution of 1932. This bloodless coup, led by the Khana Ratsadon (People's Party), comprised of military officers and civilians, ended seven centuries of absolute monarchy to establish a constitutional monarchy. However, this transition did not usher in an era of democratic stability. From the early years, tensions between factions, the growing influence of the military, and monarchist aspirations laid the groundwork for a series of upheavals. The first of many military coups occurred as early as 1933, marking the beginning of a cycle that would define Thai politics for decades to come.

The role of the Thai military in politics is unique in its persistence and perceived legitimacy. With thirteen successful coups since 1932, it has often positioned itself as the guardian of the nation, religion, and monarchy, intervening in the name of stability or to prevent real or perceived threats. These interventions, often carried out with the support of a segment of the population or the elite, have regularly interrupted periods of elected democracy, installing military juntas or 'technocratic' governments. This complex dynamic has created a cycle of power where the military remains a central political actor, capable of overthrowing civilian governments and rewriting the rules of the constitutional game.
