Born in 1853, Prince Chulalongkorn ascended the throne of Siam in 1868. Faced with increasing colonial pressure from the British and French empires, he realized that the survival and independence of his kingdom depended on rapid and profound modernization. His reign, from 1868 to 1910, was a period of unprecedented reforms, affecting all aspects of Siamese society, from administration to education, and infrastructure.
One of his most daring reforms was the gradual abolition of slavery, a deeply entrenched system. Beginning in 1874 with the law freeing the children of slaves and completed in 1905 with the law abolishing all forms of slavery, this decision radically transformed Siam's social structure. Chulalongkorn also modernized the army, created a postal system, introduced railways, and sent young nobles to study in Europe, laying the foundations for a modern and sovereign nation-state, the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized.
