At the beginning of the 20th century, the Kingdom of Siam, though spared from colonization, faced internal and external pressures. The system of absolute monarchy, in place for centuries, was increasingly challenged by an intellectual and military elite educated abroad, who aspired to political modernization. King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), who ascended the throne in 1925, inherited a country in debt and a society undergoing profound change, but his attempts at constitutional reforms were deemed too slow by some.
On June 24, 1932, the "Khana Ratsadon" (People's Party), led by figures such as Pridi Banomyong and Phraya Phahon Phonphayuhasena, launched a bloodless coup d'état. Within hours, they seized strategic locations in Bangkok, proclaimed the end of the absolute monarchy, and established a constitutional monarchy. King Prajadhipok accepted the terms, thus ushering in a new era for Thailand, marked by profound political upheavals and the beginning of a long tradition of military coups.
