Katyn: The Shadow of the Massacre and the Price of Truth
« “We always knew the truth would eventually come out.” »— Andrzej Wajda, Polish filmmaker
In April-May 1940, on orders from Stalin and the Politburo, approximately 22,000 Polish army officers, intellectuals, and police, captured after the Soviet invasion of Poland in September 1939, were systematically murdered in the Katyn forest near Smolensk, as well as in other locations. The executions, secretly carried out by the NKVD (People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs), aimed to eliminate the Polish elite and break any future resistance. The bodies were buried in mass graves.
The world only discovered the extent of the massacre in 1943, when occupying German forces exhumed the graves and attributed responsibility to the Soviets. The USSR vehemently denied this, in turn accusing the Nazis and maintaining this version for nearly 50 years of the Cold War. It was only in 1990, under international pressure and Gorbachev's glasnost, that Moscow officially admitted the NKVD's responsibility, marking a historic turning point in the recognition of Stalinist crimes.
