In August 1812, after a bloody battle, Napoleon entered Smolensk, hoping to find supplies and winter shelter. The city, burned by the Russians before their retreat, was nothing but ruins. This failure marked a turning point: the Grande Armée would not find salvation here, but the beginning of a long march towards catastrophe. Napoleon's dreams of conquest began to crumble under the charred walls of Smolensk.
Three months later, in November, Napoleon's army, exhausted and decimated by the Siberian cold, hunger, and constant Cossack attacks, passed through Smolensk again. What remained of the Grande Armée was merely a shadow. The city, once a symbol of an illusory victory, became the scene of the most unspeakable suffering, a frozen graveyard where the hope of survival faded day by day. The retreat from Russia had become the Empire's first major disaster.
