Montluc Prison, initially a military prison, was requisitioned by the Lyon Gestapo in February 1943. Under the direct authority of Klaus Barbie, the local Gestapo chief, it became a place of horror and transit for over 10,000 people. Resistance fighters, Jews, and hostages were crammed into inhumane conditions, often tortured before being deported to death camps or executed in the region.
Emblematic figures of the French Resistance, such as Jean Moulin and historian Marc Bloch, were interned there. Montluc symbolizes the brutality of the Nazi occupation and the fierce resistance of the French people. Ironically, it was at Montluc that Klaus Barbie himself was imprisoned in 1983, before his trial for crimes against humanity, marking the end of a dark chapter in Lyon's history.
