From Roman Springs to Imperial Patronage

Vichy's history began in 52 BC, when Roman legionaries, after a defeat by the Gauls, discovered hot mineral springs by the Allier River. They established a settlement called Aquae Calidae, Latin for "Hot Waters," recognizing the medicinal value of the thermal springs. The town prospered through the first two centuries AD, built around three hot springs, with aqueducts and sewers. The name Vichy itself dates back to the 14th century.

In the 17th century, Vichy's alkaline springs gained recognition, attracting visitors like the Marquise de Sévigné, who sought relief from rheumatism. The daughters of Louis XV, Victoire and Adélaïde, visited in 1785 and, finding the facilities uncomfortable, urged their nephew Louis XVI to commission thermal baths, completed in 1787. Napoleon III's patronage in the 19th century transformed Vichy. Between 1861 and 1866, he initiated urban works, including the construction of a railway station in 1862, an embankment to protect against floods, and a 13-hectare English park designed from drained marshes. This era also saw the construction of a new town hall, the Saint-Louis Church, and a large casino.

Vichy in the 20th Century: Belle Époque and a Dark Chapter

The Belle Époque marked another construction period in Vichy. In 1903, the Opéra, the Hall des Sources, and an Oriental-style bathhouse were inaugurated. The Parc des Sources was enclosed by a 700-meter-long metal gallery from the 1889 World Fair, adorned with a thistle frieze. By the early 20th century, Vichy was receiving nearly 100,000 spa visitors annually, with hotels and villas catering to a wealthy clientele.

The city's history took a turn during World War II. Following the 1940 armistice with Nazi Germany, Vichy became the seat of the French State, a pro-German collaborationist government led by Marshal Philippe Pétain. The French parliament voted full powers to Pétain in the Vichy Opera House on July 10, 1940. While Paris remained the official capital, Vichy functioned as the de facto capital until August 1944. The Vichy regime implemented racist policies and participated in the Holocaust, targeting Jewish populations. After the war, Vichy worked to regain its status as a spa town, and in 2021, its thermal baths and architecture were recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Great Spa Towns of Europe."

• —Parc des Sources — This park was created by decree of Napoleon I in 1812 as a promenade for spa visitors. It features a wrought-iron gallery, added in 1898, that was originally part of the 1889 World Fair.
• —Opéra de Vichy — Inaugurated in 1903, this Art Nouveau theater is an example of Belle Époque architecture. It is the only Art Nouveau theater in France with gold and ivory colors.
• —Grand Casino (now Palais des Congrès-Opéra) — Built between 1863 and 1865 at the request of Napoleon III, its main façade facing the Parc des Sources is adorned with caryatids representing the four seasons. In 1940, the French parliament voted full powers to Marshal Pétain here.
• —Source des Célestins — This spring, known since the Middle Ages, flows into an oval-shaped pavilion built in 1910. Visitors can drink the naturally carbonated mineral water directly from its four taps.
• —Église Saint-Louis — Commissioned by Napoleon III and consecrated in 1865, this neo-medieval church combines elements of Auvergne Romanesque, Burgundian Romanesque, and Gothic styles. During WWII, it served as the cathedral of the French State, hosting official ceremonies.
• —Old Vichy district — This historic area has narrow streets and buildings. It contains a mix of architectural styles including medieval, Art Deco, neo-classical, and neo-Gothic.

The period from May through September offers warm and pleasant weather, with average temperatures around 21°C (70°F) in July and August, and highs reaching 26-27°C (79-81°F). July and August are the sunniest months, with less rainfall. Mid-June is active due to the annual Napoleon III festivities.

Spring and early autumn offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds. Winter, from December to February, is cooler and damp, with average temperatures around 4-6°C (39-43°F) and a higher chance of rain or light snow. Some venues might have reduced hours. May is the wettest month.

Vichy is a compact city, making it easy to explore most attractions on foot. Direct Intercités trains from Paris (around 3.5 hours) and Lyon (2 hours) arrive at the train station. The Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne Airport is an option for those flying in.

Several paid parking options are available. The underground Parking La Poste (Place Charles-de-Gaulle) offers 430 spaces and is under video surveillance, with the first 15 minutes free. Other paid car parks include Carnot, Porte de France, and Victoria. Free parking can be found at Esplanade des Combattants en Afrique du Nord or Place Jean Epinat. The Q-Park 4 Chemins is centrally located near Parc des Sources, the Opéra, and the Casino du Grand Café.

Public transportation is not necessary for central Vichy, but buses are available for longer distances. The city center, particularly the Cœur de Ville – Jaurès – Victoria district, has shops, restaurants, and services.
