Lyon never reveals all its secret passages
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Lyon's traboules — secret passageways running through the buildings of Vieux-Lyon — served as a clandestine network during World War II. Resistance fighters and British SOE agents slipped through them to escape the Gestapo. Jean Moulin, head of the Resistance, held his secret meetings there before being betrayed and captured in June 1943.
Vieux-Lyon, with its Renaissance façades and cobblestone lanes, hides one of the densest networks of passageways in Europe. Traboules — from the Latin trans ambulare, "to pass through" — are corridors running through buildings from one street to another, often invisible behind heavy wooden doors. During the Occupation, these passages became the vital arteries of the Resistance. Jean Moulin, sent by de Gaulle to unify the movements, walked through them daily, risking his life.

« "I did not know it was so simple to do one's duty when one is in danger." »— — Jean Moulin, First Combat, 1947 (posthumous)
Lyon, capital of the French Resistance, was the theater of an unprecedented clandestine struggle. From 1940, networks organized in the city occupied by the German army from November 1942. The traboules of Vieux-Lyon and Croix-Rousse became escape routes: enter through one street, exit through another, unbeknownst to patrols. Underground printing presses produced leaflets and forged papers there.
Jean Moulin, a former prefect dismissed by Vichy, was sent to Lyon by General de Gaulle in January 1942 to unify the Resistance movements. Under the pseudonym "Rex," he traveled through the traboules, held secret meetings in back courtyards, and coordinated the maquis. On June 21, 1943, betrayed by an informer, he was arrested at Caluire, a Lyon suburb, during a clandestine meeting. Tortured by Klaus Barbie, the "Butcher of Lyon," he died without talking.
The SOE (Special Operations Executive), the British secret services, also operated in Lyon. Agents like Virginia Hall — nicknamed "the Limping Lady" by the Gestapo — used the traboules to organize weapons drops and escapes. Today, the traboules are still there, some open to the public, others hidden behind entry codes. Lyon has never revealed all its secrets.
